BudApp
A community dog walking platform connecting owners and walkers

The Problem
Dog owners want to discover walks, share routes, and connect with other walkers. Nothing existed that wasn't just a map app with a dog icon. The community aspect - the shared knowledge, the local recommendations, the sense of belonging - was missing entirely.
Building a community platform as a solo founder with no funding meant every architectural and product decision had to be right first time. There was no margin for a costly pivot.
The Approach
I built BudApp cross-platform (web, Android, iOS) using React, Capacitor and Firebase. The decision to go cross-platform from day one was strategic: dog owners use every device, and a web presence was essential for SEO and sharing. Solo operation from the first commit.
Zero paid acquisition. Every user came through organic channels - Facebook community groups, word of mouth, press coverage. The growth strategy was built into the product: shareable walks, community contributions, local relevance.
AI collaboration shaped every major decision - from database architecture to partnership strategy. The BBC South West coverage and NSA collaboration came from strategically-timed outreach informed by AI-assisted positioning work.
How It Grew
BudApp's growth is the marketing, not a marketing budget. Zero paid acquisition - 1,900+ users in around six months, built founder-led and in public. The engine is local Facebook community groups worked area by area (Westward Ho!, Bideford, Barnstaple and outward), paired with location-based content designed to drive genuine local discovery rather than vanity reach.
Distribution compounds through mission-aligned partnerships and outreach - the National Sheep Association, the Cinnamon Trust, and ongoing conversations with animal-welfare organisations - plus earned media including BBC South West across online, radio and TV. Two decades of technology marketing, pointed at my own product.
